SECTION 1403A - VENEER

1403.A1 Scope

1403A.1.1 General.
(all veneer and its application shall conform to this code; wainscots not exceeding 4 feet in height above adjacent ground level may be exempted if approved by the building official)

1403A.1.2 Limitations.
(exterior veneer shall not be attached to wood-frame construction more than 25 feet above foundation, except by special design approved by the enforcement agency; where wood-frame provides lateral support, vertical load-supporting members shall be continuous between foundation and top fo veneer)

1403A.2 Definitions.

VENEER (nonstructural facing)
Anchored Veneer (secured to and supported by approved connectors attached to backing)

1403A.3 Materials.
(for masonry units and mortar, see Chapter 21A; anchors, supports, and ties shall be corrosion resistant; fine grout per Section 2103A.4.2)

1403A.4 Design

1403A.4.1 General
(veneer shall support no load than its own weight and dead load of veneer above)

1403A.4.3 Anchored veneer.
(designed to resist a horizontal force equal to at least twice the weight of the veneer)

1403A.6 Anchored Veneer.

1403A.6.1 Permitted backing.
(exterior veneer including its backing shall provide a weatherproof covering)

1403A.6.2 Height and support limitations.
(supported on footings, foundations, or other noncombustible support; in Seismic Zones 2, 3, and 4, weight of all veneers over 30 feet above foundation or support shall be supported by noncumbustible, corrosive-resistant structural framing; above the initial 30-foot height, horizontal supports shall not be spaced more than 12 feet vertically; supports shall be provided over all openings; deflections shall not exceed 1/600 under full load)

1403A.6.3 Area limitations.
(unlimited, except to provide for control joints)

1403A.6.4 Application.

1403A.6.4.1 General.
(in lieu of design requirements of Sections 1403.4.1 and 1403.4.3, anchored veneer may be applied per this section)

1403A.6.4.2 Masonry and stone units [5 inches (127 mm) maximum in thickness].

(anchored directly to structural backing by one of the following manners:

All masonry veneer shall be placed 1 inch clear of its backing;


1. wall ties spaced to support not more than 2 square feet of wall area, and not more than 24 inches o.c. horizontally; continuous joint reinforcement; 1 inch space between sheathing and veneer filled with mortar, or alternatively, mortar may be spot bedded at all ties

2. if spot bedding not used, use 14 gage anchors with 22 gage slots)
